Free things to do in Copenhagen
- Take a free walking tour
As mentioned in a few of my travel posts, I like doing walking tours in new cities that I go to. It is a great opportunity to learn fun facts and see the city from a local. We learned a few Danish phrases including hygge, which is similar to cozy/comfortable. Remember to take some cash with you to tip your tour guide!
2. Walk through Langelinie park
I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the Langelinie area was to get to the Little Mermaid statue. There are large cruise ships that dock there and the park is right by the water. I would recommend taking time to stroll through on a nice day. Although the Little Mermaid statue is one of the top things tourists see, it was a bit underwhelming.
3. Visit the Rosenborg Gardens
Although the Rosenborg castle is ticketed, It is free to visit the gardens. They are the country’s oldest royal gardens and are quite a sight.
4. Visit the collection at the Museum of Design
The museum is free for anyone under age 26 to visit. It was interesting to see their collection of designs, materials, and sketches from designers ranging from the Golden Age of design to today.
5. Go up Tårnet tower for a view of Copenhagen
It is open every day except for Mondays and is a great alternative to the Church of our Savior since you do not need to pay for the entrance fee or walk up the spiral staircase outside. You do have to wait on line to take an elevator up to the tower but you do get a 360 view of Copenhagen from the Christiansborg Palace’s perspective.
6. Walk along canals and the Nyhaven area
It is the iconic area with the colorful houses.
7. Visit Christiania
It is an interesting alternative community that you have to visit to see for yourself.
Not so free things to do
- Tivoli Amusement park
It is one of the things you have to do when you are in Copenhagen. You can spend a few hours trying to get on the rides there. I would suggest getting an unlimited wristband for the rides, which is separate from the entrance fee.
2. Walk up the spiral staircase of the Church of our Savior
If you are not afraid of heights, I would recommend walking up the stairs of the Church of our Savior to get a 360 view of Copenhagen. Warning: The stairs are quite narrow and the last 150 steps are outside the church walls.
3. Eat at as many restaurants as you can
Copenhagen is a diversely cultural city with a lot of good food to eat. Here is my roundup of food that I ate there.
